China Toys And Baby Products Association will formulate the first safety standards for the infant tableware industry. In a press conference during the China Toy Fair at Shanghai, October 14 -16, the Association declared that it was necessary to formulate industrial standards.

Liang Mei, the Secretary General of China Toys And Baby Products Association said, “The new standards will be developed from scratch to fill the big gap in the infant tableware industry.

All the infant tableware enterprises are volunteered to comply with this standards. The products meeting the standards will be labelled to tell the consumers that they are up to the standards “ The companies with substandard products will be punished”,Liang said,”We will not be able to enforce a punishment if there is no industry standards for us to estimate. We will communicate with the government, and hope that the standards will eventually be adopted by the government in future.”

Mu Ai Ying Tong (a company selling infant products in China) reached annual sales of nearly 100 million yuan last year. The company is estimated to grow 30-50% in sales this year. Mu Ai Ying Tong has production plant in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province China, which uses only imported PPSU and PP and domestic silica gel as the raw materials to achieve high safety standards.

Liang said, “The new standards will have a greater impact for the SMEs which only have limited funds. We used polycarbonate in the past and had a recall involving millions of products in order to meet the mandatory requirements. We have the ability to improve the quality of the products and meet the standards. But the small factories cannot afford the to recall their products in such a large scale.”

The new standards, which are applicable to infant tableware, will test the exterior of products and the chemical properties of the materials. The government safety standards which covers all children’s all products and toys are expected to release in 2016.
